Jae gently rolled up the map from the wooden table and arranged a tremendous mass of books into stacks by subject on the rough surface.

“All right, so we should begin with etiquette, as I believe that will take the longest. After, we can move into history and languages,” he said, opening the first pages of an enormous book.

“I’m going to need a minute,” Ava sputtered. Without looking back at Jae, she flew out of the library. If it were still possible, her heart would be racing a mile a minute, her palms would be clammy, and she would be shaking all over. Though her transformation took care of the physical reactions, the internal strife needed to be quelled before she could continue any kind of lesson with Jae.

A sigh of relief dispelled the tingling in her chest when she found Margret moving listlessly with a duster over the shell lamps in her room.

“Am I happy to see you. I need to talk to you. I don’t know if I can help those guys, there is so much they are expecting of me, and I feel like I’m missing a ton of information,” she said, dropping onto the couch before sitting up and realizing Margret couldn’t have understood a single word.

“Only you can determine your strength to achieve this formidable task with which you have been charged.” Margret’s clear, warm voice moved closer as she kneeled at Ava’s feet.

Ava bit her lip as a shock wave ran through her.

Did she speak in English, or can I totally understand German?

Margret placed a hand on Ava’s knee and continued in German. “I have cared for Helene her entire life, raised her to know right from wrong and to seek righteousness when witnessing injustice. She may come across as harsh, but she is passionate about her mission to bring equality into the world of the European Risen. With your help, this can be achieved through the path of least resistance.”

“But what if I’m not strong enough?” Ava asked in English.

“My dear, you are descended from a powerful line of women. How do you believe you have gained an understanding of a new language so rapidly? The enhanced command they share over their vampiric state includes the ability to learn at a rate unmatched by the Risen of the world. Use this power inside you to become strong enough.” Margret lifted her hand to Ava’s chin to bring her head higher. “Let Jean-Pierre and the others guide you. Learn from them and the resources available to you. They will help you achieve success. If you agree to help them.”

Ava nodded, bringing her hands to her mouth to bite the stubs of her nails.

I can do this. I can do this.

“What if I get caught working for those guys? Or worse, I lose myself in the position of heir to the family?” Ava asked, recalling the picture of a happy family she had conjured every time she thought of what she was missing.

But that picture isn’t real.
